PRIDE SHELTER AT CAPE TOWN PRIDE 2017

We had an awesome time at Pride today! The parade kicked off at midday. Thanks to Kimera Saroop, Asia Phiri and Shane Engel for marching with us, carrying our banner and giving out lots of leaflets to onlookers. This kind of awareness raising is invaluable.

Back at Reddam Field, our stand proved a popular focal point for people arriving for the party. Board member Fehraad De Nicker brought in the crowds by running a fun, interactive game whereby people paid R20+ to pop a balloon attached to the nether regions of our gorgeous volunteers, Gage Abell and Jordan Chandler, win a spot prize (ranging from wine and V&A Waterfront vouchers to tequila shots) and learn a fact about the shelter. We raised about R2,500 through this! Guy Hamilton, our resident psychologist, and his partner Jurgen also did a great job interacting with partygoers, raising more awareness about what we do and collecting more money.

A massive thank you to the prize sponsors: Ben Wei, Redemption_Burgers, Blokes Hair, Checkers and our Board members for their individual donations.

Another huge thank you must also go to Cape Town Pride and OUTReach Africa for donating R30,000 to us!

All in all, it was a great day for the Pride Shelter. As always, our fondest thanks go to Matron Jan for helping with the preparations and to Derick de Kock, who went beyond the call of duty to help make the event a success. He also collected the largest individual amount with his collection tin ...over R800!

See you at Cape Town Pride 2018!

VODACOM SUPPORTS THE PRIDE SHELTER IN PRIDE WEEK

3/3/2017

To mark Pride week in Cape Town, the Vodacom LGBTI & Friends team descended on the Pride Shelter this afternoon to volunteer in the back garden. They generously donated compost and mulch to invigorate the dry soil and planted a range of vegetables. They also helped to chop up some of the branches from our recently pruned trees.

While one group was working in the garden, another was given a tour of the shelter. It was great to raise awareness about how we support LGBTI people during crisis periods in their lives and explain what other forms of assistance we need to continue this work.

Thanks to Vodacom for the support!

HAMLET FUNDRAISER FOR PRIDE SHELTER

Calling all Shakespeare fans in Cape Town! Abrahamse & Meyer’s internationally acclaimed, all-male production of Hamlet will be on at Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay in April, and the performance at 7.30pm on Tuesday 18th has been dedicated to raising funds for the Pride Shelter!

The production takes its inspiration from one of the earliest recorded performances of Hamlet during Shakespeare’s lifetime. On 31st March 1608, off the east coast of South Africa, the crew of the East India ship, Red Dragon, performed it for their captain.

Tickets can be bought through Computicket. There are 256 tickets available and cost R180 each. The Pride Shelter will get R50 from each sale!

Please follow these instructions. Don’t buy the ‘Full price’ or ‘Randgo’ tickets, as they won’t benefit the shelter financially. Get the ‘Pride Night’ tickets.

1) Go to http://online.computicket.com/web/event/hamlet/1079206486/0/75558675
2) Select the 7.30pm performance on Tuesday 18th April
3) Select as many tickets as you want for R180 each next to ‘Pride Night’
4) Click on ‘Check availability’
5) In the ‘Validation required’ pop-up box, type the code ‘SHELTER’ in the grey box(es) (the number of boxes corresponds to the number of tickets you have selected)
6) Click on ‘Add to basket’
7) If you are happy with the seat selection, click on ‘Add to basket’.
8) You’ll then have 15 minutes to complete the transaction. Go to ‘My basket’ and proceed to check-out.

Be quick! As the performance is open to the general public, not everyone buying tickets for 18th April will know the special ‘SHELTER’ code. We’d love as many people as possible who know the code to get tickets. So please share with your friends and family. If all 256 tickets are sold via ‘Pride Night’, the Pride Shelter will get R12,800!
