The Pride Shelter Trust is very pleased to announce the addition to the Board of Nondumiso “Ndumie” Funda.
Ndumie is a 40-year-old lesbian activist who, in 2008, founded Luleki Sizwe, an organisation that rescues and supports lesbian women in the township areas of Cape Town who have been the victims of 'corrective rape'. She formed the organisation after the tragic deaths (in 2005 and 2007 respectively) from AIDS of her friend Luleka Makiwane and fiancée Nosizwe Bizana, both of whom contracted the disease while being raped because of their sexuality.
Ndumie is widely recognised as an exceptional activist in her field, receiving international acclaim. In February 2014, she was bestowed with the medal of Knight of the French National Order of Merit (Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite de la République Française) by the French Ambassador to South Africa, Elizabeth Barbier, in recognition of her work fighting for LGBTI rights.
We are honoured to welcome Ndumie to the Board of the Pride Shelter Trust.
