Thank you to everyone involved – the volunteers, stall holders, entertainers, market goers, donors of items to sell and prizes to give away and the people who helped to organise it.
We raised just over R22,500, but there is a bit more money to come in! This will really help us to continue our work to support LGBTI people during crisis periods in their lives.
Firstly, a huge thanks to Matron Jan and Derick for driving the organisation of the market. Without their hard work and dedication, it would not have happened. And to Guy Hamilton, who contributed a lot of time and effort.
The stall holders from outside greatly added to the event and all contributed 10%+ of their takings on the day to us!
- Johan Skors from Mobile Coffee Café - For Any Occasion (www.coffeefao.co.za)
- Goodmore Zvoutete from Healthy bite
- Rita Grimm with her olives and olive oil
- Randall Smith with his cinnamon doughnuts
- Charl Horn with his wraps & burritos
- Henriette Derby from Boho Boudoir Bazaar with her antiques, collectibles and vintage jewellery
- Da Silva Leandra doing henna tattoos and selling costume jewellery
- Verron Matthews & Bazz Mia Matthews from BAZZ Collection. They also ran a raffle and with the takings from that have bought us a much-needed weed eater!
The shelter also had its own stalls – clothes, bric-a-brac, books, DVDs and CDs, cakes, pancakes, toasted sandwiches, boerewors rolls, drinks and a photo booth. Thanks to Daniel Malan, Gavin Collins, Ian McMahon, Jim Dai, Dave Nel and partner Garth, Michael Ipsen and his partner Siraaj, Germaine McArthur, George Nel and Nathaniel Balat for running these stalls. And thanks to Petro van Dyk, Anel van Urk, Swinton Henry Johnson, Gary Mills from Sweet at Heart and Brigitte Hilland for donating the amazing quiches, cakes and cupcakes for us to sell.
The entertainers were amazing. We started off with the awesome Ikamva Marimba Band (http://hajo-sa.com/ikamva/ikamva_en.htm) playing a range of music for about an hour. They were followed by Shannon Devy & Evan Strauss from Lo-ghost (www.lo-ghost.bandcamp.com) and London Louw, who all belted out some great songs. To top it all off, we were then treated to a spectacular performance by Tiara Harwood, Kat Gilardi and Angel Lalamore from 3D Divas Cabaret.
A huge thanks to Daniel Van Wyk, who stepped in at the last minute to provide a sound system! Without him, we would not have heard from the singers!
We were also lucky to have Nidhi Chaitow from Prem Nidhi - Conscious Rhythm who held a drumming workshop under the trees and allowed some people to get rid of some stress.
We also had a raffle with some great prizes. Thanks to Ian McMahon for the ten MCQP tickets; Maronelle Kritzinger from Supreme Sharks (www.supremesharks.com) for the shark cage diving experience for two; Mark Mckeon from The Glen Boutique Hotel & Spa (www.glenhotel.co.za) for the four-hand massage; and Tiger’s Milk and La Parada for the meal vouchers.
On top of that, the following businesses donated prizes for our pick-a-box game: Anatoli’s Turkish Restaurant (www.anatoli.co.za), Hajo's Lodge & Tours (http://www.hajo-sa.com/en/accommodation.htm), Blokes Hair (www.blokeshair.com) and Wade&Co Hair Design (www.wadeandco.co.za).
Finally, our thanks also go to Rob at Minuteman Press for printing our event banner and flyers for free, Judy Van As from Pick ‘n Pay for the R500 food voucher, and Premier Foods Blue Ribbon Bakery (www.premierfmcg.com/Brands-Bread-Blue-Ribbon.aspx) for the bread for the toasted cheese sandwiches.
We’ll hold another market next year. See you then!
